Bryan Lara is a Mexican American photographer who is pushing portrait photography to its limits. Born June 12th 1998, Lara tells stories through film and digital photography inspired by chiaroscuro lighting in the works of artists like Caravaggio and Kentaro Miura. Lara’s experimentation with lighting setups as well as his neurodivergence combine to produce a conceptualized image of emotion in his portraits. The personal connection he has with the talent helps as well, like in Alan, where the subject is Lara’s best friend. Based in Austin Texas, he specializes in hahnemühle prints framed in museum quality glass, and for each of his works there’s only three ever printed. Lara has been featured in exhibitions like AIG Somos Latinos Art Exhibition and at the International Gallery of Photography in Glasgow Scotland.

How did you get started with photography

I picked up photography to help provide content for my graphic and website design projects. From there, I started to fall in love with being a photographer. One intriguing fact that really pushed me over to photography was my experience as a Photo Booth Coordinator for Pixster Austin. I really enjoyed working with this company because I was able to easily gain knowledge and experience of a true vendor. Just imagine hauling a photo booth set up to a concert, restaurant, conventions, corporate parties, major events at COTA, and even Weddings. Trust me, I have done all sorts of special events. Throughout my experience manning the Photo Booth, I was always watching the Photographers. Looking at their equipment, how they moved, interacted, and stayed hidden amongst the crowd. They are explorers capturing memories, moments, and art. This sparked my fire for the need to be the adventurer behind the lens and not the booth.

What do you love about your job?

I love to capture the memories, moments, or project through a series of storytelling. With my art and design background, I am also able to offer services others may not. Such as the designing of postcards, websites, or any printing collateral using the photos taken.

What are some of your favorite places in Austin to take photographs?

Around Lake Travis and Congress in Downtown Austin are typically my favorite locations. I tend to travel on my bicycle to get around. Every night I try to find new areas and think of different strategies for my shots. It ends up becoming a fun adventure.
