I found that in life, the passions that drove us as children will eventually circle back around to us. If you are lucky, those passions will reemerge ten fold with a driving force you won't be able to ignore. This has proven true in my life with my love of photography. I've shot since I was a young boy and trained in film photography. As an adult, I have been self taught in digital photography.

camera Pentax K-1; Pentax K-1

My name is Michael Lunceford. I’m the principal photographer at Sky of Texas Wedding Photography. I took up photography in 2003, and started shooting weddings professionally in 2010. Since then, I have branched into other forms of photography including real estate, portraits, family, food, and even automobiles. I like doing varied types of photography because things I learn in one form tend to find their way into others. This keeps me fresh and stimulated.

How did you get started with photography

In college I majored in sociology, which required 6 hours of fine arts electives. The two electives I chose were Art History and Intro to Film photography. Thus began my love affair with photography. I travelled to Honduras for a few months and guided backpacking trips in Colorado for a few summers, each of which led to plenty of opportunities grow my skills and portfolio. Out of college, my first "real" job was as a sales account manager for an outdoor company. During those years, I still took photo gigs on the weekends or at night. After a few years, I had enough work to make the leap to full time and I've never looked back.

What do you love about your job?

As a sociologist, I am trained to look for the underlying story or pattern, in order to better understand a culture. I love looking beneath the surface of a shoot and bringing out the deeper narrative. I believe in the intrinsic value of human life, and in the value of the natural world, and it is an absolute joy to have a job that allows me to showcase the beauty in people, places, and the things people create.

What are some of your favorite places in Austin to take photographs?

An intimate knowledge of the Austin area is one of my greatest strengths as a photographer. I am an avid runner, and have learned the city really well through years of traveling around town on foot. Some of my favorite places to shoot are the relatively unknown side-trails in the Barton Creek Greenbelt. The main trail can be extremely crowded on the weekends, but some of Austin's best sunset vistas lie just off the beaten path. I also love shooting on the Blanco River in Wimberley. The falling leaves of autumn and the deep blues and greens of spring and summer make that setting particularly dramatic any time of year. Lastly, I love shooting portraits on the city's east side. There is so much character on Austin's east side, and you can always find the right location for each different personality.
