Matt B.

camera Canon EOS 70D

Hi there, I’m Matt, a portrait and headshot photographer, based on the Upper West Side, New York City. I have a private studio on the UWS, but love shooting outdoors and on location. The most rewarding photograph for me is the one where the subject sees something in their photo they've never seen before. I love working with the client to bring something out of them - an expression, a look, a subtlety, a vulnerable, intriguing or beautiful side of themselves that they haven't seen before in a photo. But even in non-directed shoots (events, parties, concerts), I still love focusing on capturing the essence of the person or moment. Portrait and headshot shoots are my favorite because of the personal nature of them. I love listening to a client, seeing them settle in to a shoot, seeing them become more comfortable, guiding and directing them and really - getting to know someone. The true joy in photography for me however, is actually nothing do to with the camera. Seeing the joy someone gets in seeing themselves in a way they've never have before, finding new a confidence, seeing their own beauty, seeing someone achieve their career goals or dreams with their new photos, is really the true satisfaction. Whatever your photo needs might be, I'll look forward to working together!

How did you get started with photography

I grew up in Michigan and became interested in photography around 13 years old when a friend of mine let me borrow an old Canon film camera that he acquired for next to nothing at a garage sale. I was addicted right from getting my first roll of film developed. I started photographing my friends. Taking their portraits, photographing them skateboarding, and playing in bands. It became my sole focus in high school, and I decided early on to go to an art focused college. I honed my craft at college in Chicago, and went on to make it my full time profession.

What do you love about your job?

I love that my job allows me to constantly meet new people, and with this, allows me to constantly tell new stories. Photography has the ability to draw connections between people with just one eye catching image. I've had the opportunity to work with such a large range of clients in the past 6 years, and together we've created work that has reached audiences all over the world. It's a humbling experience to do what you love as a career.

What are some of your favorite places in New York City to take photographs?

New York is such a vast city, with so many options available to make amazing photographs. With such an overwhelming landscape, I enjoy breaking it down to it's more simple elements. I love to make street photographs with classic NYC row houses in the background. I love to shoot in SOHO and Greenwich Village for their iconic looks. When access is available, I can never deny a rooftop shoot. The location is always decided based on the clients aesthetic, and I'm full of suggestions whether you're looking for a more gritty urban landscape, or a clean minimalistic look.
