Derek F
Canon EOS 5DS R
Derek has had a passion for photography since the Fall of 1996, when he enrolled in a black and white photography course during his first term at Luther College, in Decorah, Iowa. Covering the history of film and photography, the roles of influential artists, camera and lens basics, and darkroom development and printing techniques, this course formed the foundation of Derek's formal artistic pursuits. After graduating with a BA in Art, Derek pursued a graduate degree in Museum Studies at George Washington University, in Washington, DC. Around this time, Chip Clark, lead photographer at that time for the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, offered Derek the keys to his personal darkroom, as well as endless wisdom and personal tips. After exploring other media for a few years, Derek rediscovered his passion for photography with the purchase of a Sinar 4'x5' large format camera in the Spring of 2016, and a Mamiya RB67 later that Fall. Since then, he has dedicated himself to the art and business of photography as a way of life, and encourages others to pursue their dreams as well.

How did you get started with photography?

My first real experience with photography occurred at my high school graduation. We had a cheap 110 camera while I was growing up, and a Polaroid, but I was given a Canon Rebel G as a graduation gift, which I loved immediately. I took a few rolls of pictures that day, documenting friends, family, and many memories... I was soooo excited to get the rolls back! Well, I unknowingly had the camera in manual mode, which I did not understand as an SLR novice.... all my pictures were pitch black. From that exact moment, I became fascinated with photography, and vowed to understand everything I could about my camera, film, printing, etc. I enrolled in a black and white darkroom photography course that Fall at my college, and never looked back.

What type of shoots do you enjoy doing the most?

I prefer shoots in which I, and the subject, are allowed to engage in a thoughtful act... to slow down, and to breathe. I enjoy technical photography, in which I am in control of all aspects of the image creation process, but the subject dictates it's/their own space and needs. Alternatively, concerts and events in which controlled chaos rules, can be extremely enjoyable, and some of my most successful images were taken in a moment that simply wanted to exist without help or apologies.

What are some of your favorite places in Portland to take photographs?

I am an outdoor enthusiast, and love to channel my inner Ansel Adams. I am also fortunate to live in the beautiful Pacific NW, a region overflowing with natural beauty. I find myself attracted to elevation, water, and trees, and strive to compose images that reflect the technical quality of the masters, while maintaining my own artistic vision/voice. Multnomah Falls (and the surrounding area, including Vista House), Mt. Scott, Mt. Talbert, Powell Butte, and other such areas are wonderful for nature lovers in Portland. When it comes to urban architecture, and human elements, I love to juxtapose old against new, industrial vs. refined, small details amongst grand schemes, etc. Historic homes, large public spaces, monuments, and large structures (cathedrals, capitols, etc.) all appeal to me as well.
