Gina is a freelance writer turned freelance photographer. She began as a writer - covering food, events, and beer. Her articles often requested accompanying photos and so she decided to take matters into her own hands. Since then she has cultivated her photography talents through continuing education at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) and in addition to magazine photography, she has moved on to shooting portraits, engagements, families and weddings as her own small business. She has even taken on some impressive jobs including shooting for clients such as director Kevin Smith, and renowned street artist Shepard Fairey, but her favorite subject to shoot will always be her rescue dog Swiss Miss.

How did you get started with photography

I started with photography a year or so after I left college. I had gone to school for Film Media so photography was not to far from my interests. Once I had a grasp on how to utilized and manipulate the controls of the camera I became fascinated with all of the possibilities to come. From that point I began challenging myself and learning many different styles of photography. I am always on a learning path and look forward to whatever new opportunities have to offer.

What do you love about your job?

My mission is to understand the personality, the environment or the form of a subject, then to capture the true image of the moment. There are many times where it takes some time and a fine touch to make a person feel comfortable in their own skin, and I find it to be important in taking the time to extract someones true personality and help them elicit that in the form of a perfect photograph. In photography there are numerous variables that compose a photo, it is the duty of the photographer to draw out those elements to get the most appropriate shot, and that is my goal.

What are some of your favorite places in Providence to take photographs?

Providence has some beautiful architecture all around. Given that is was one of the original 13 colonies, there are many historic buildings scattered about the city. I frequent the upper east side to get and elevated view of the inner city. I also like to shoot buildings in the Down City area.
