Charl Folscher is a self-taught photographer with 13 years' experience. He's had the opportunity to work in a variety of fields including stage/theatre, events, real estate and weddings. He is a good communicator which he believes is half the job of a photographer and has an ability to put his subjects at ease for a more natural end result. "I love people's stories more than I love to create. I work and function from here, not from my need to be creative."
I think my favorite part of being a photographer is that no two days are ever the same. I love the actual act of shooting, be it outside or inside. Time goes by in an instant when I get to shoot. Another favorite aspect is that moment when you realize, especially during editing that you have captured a split second of light so well that it moves you to emotion.
I have done mostly weddings and the most valuable aspect I can add to the process is how I communicate with the couple. Putting them at ease before and during the day is a big asset to ensure a great end product. I have also done stage / live performance shoots. Here I familiarize myself as much as I can with the performer's stage mannerisms and habits. I also try to find alternative angles before the event starts that I can move to for unique shots. Corporate events can be difficult to be creative with and here it is especially important to create a rapport with people. At times the corporate client really does not want your creative approach but only want straightforward "informational" shots. You have to figure out expectations because it changes a lot from job to job. As I said my favorite discipline is travel photography. The way I make a shoot successful is to have a head like an owl. I am constantly looking around, observing and hungry for something unique to capture. Taking the picture is the easy part for me. Finding the money shot is half of the work and this really goes for any kind of shoot and photography discipline.
I have had a few photographs published in newspapers and magazines.
My other passion is writing and performing music and I once sang in front of a crowd of 43000 people in Cape Town, South Africa, which is where I was born and raised.
