More about Emily D....

What do you love about your job?

I love being behind the scenes. At a restaurant shoot, I love being in the kitchen, talking with the chef and working to make the food look as beautiful and eye-catching as possible. I love being introduced to new restaurants and experiencing food culture. Food can be so artistic, the presentation and plating is so important. I am a true believer in "we eat with our eyes." I also love working with artisans, makers, and shop owners. I love seeing how things are made and experiencing the process behind the end product. Photographing that process and getting a behind the scenes look into people's lives is exciting to me!

What types of shoots have you done and how did you make them special?

I strive to create photographs that are engaging and soulful. I pay special attention to composition, color, texture, and lighting. I want to fully understand my client's aesthetics and reflect their uniqueness in the photographs. If I'm working with a person, I try to make the photoshoot relaxing and fun. Many people are so insecure about having their photo taken, and pleasantly surprised by the end photographs. Women are especially appreciative, because I think as a female photographer, I pay close attention to things like hair, make-up, and flattering body angles.
