Shelby was formally trained in photography at Towson University, where she received her Bachelor of Science in Art + Design. While studying, Shelby found herself being drawn more and more toward using artificial lighting to create a natural-looking image. She often looks for ways to incorporate added light into her images, aiming to create a visually interesting image of a subject, rather than relying on the uniqueness of the subject, alone, to carry the image. Her mastery of artificial light allows her to have complete control over her shoots and over the look of the final product.
I love going to new places meeting new people. I am an avid traveler, and whenever I meet another traveler along my way, I instantly connect with them and want to capture our experiences together. While taking corporate headshots in Baltimore may not sound as exciting as photographing kite surfers in Spain, I can assure you that they both come with their own unique challenges and benefits. I love to laugh with my subjects and make them feel comfortable. As they walk onto my set, people often tell me that having their picture taken is about as much fun as going to the dentist. I try to ruin that perception of photoshoots whenever I can.
What types of shoots have you done and how did you make them special?
I have photographed families, weddings, product, sports, fine art, portraits.. pretty much everything. Each photoshoot is special, I never go into a shoot with the same strategy as a previous one. Every time I meet a subject or a client, I take their personality into account, and it is this mix of my and their personalities that makes every photoshoot unrepeatable.
